An Interview with Pastor Don

Q: Why did you enter into ministry?

A: The night I gave my life to the Lord, the one thing that I asked of Him was to not make me a pastor! I didn’t have real good role models regarding the ministry. So needless to say God had to change my heart. I actually fell into ministry. I loved ministering and one day realized that the only difference between what I was doing and being a full-time minister is that I had no paper telling me that I was a pastor. After that revelation I got my ministerial license.

Q: What motivates you to work each day in God's house?

A: A sense of honor because of what I get to do, along with my love for my God and for people.

Q: What will we never see you do as a pastor?

A: Great singing, great music, great “looking” church, but void of true worship…oh, and also having something stupid done to me in front the congregation because someone met a fund raising goal!

Q: Name some people (past or present) that have inspired or shaped your life?

A: Oswald Chambers (Author of My Utmost for His highest and an artist), Dennis Jernigan (Worship leader who uses his past sin as a tool of ministry), St. Francis of Assisi (I love his radical love for the less fortunate), Vanya (a soviet martyr in the 70’s), and My dad (He has inspired me with his love for others and he is hilarious!)

Q: What dream(s) do you have for the church?

A: I want to see lost people coming to Christ daily and to see the artistic community in the Bay area invaded by the power and the love of Jesus.

Q: What do you do to relax?

A: I used to be a beekeeper, (weird hey?) I love to read, especially biographies or missions stories, bike, and any form of art.

Q: What is your favorite ice cream?

A: Bryers mint chocolate chip!!

Q: What web sites, magazines or blogs do you visit most often?

A: Missions sites or missionary blogs, I read a lot more than spend time on the Internet.

Q: What do you hate most about church life?

A: The way that we as a church hide from each other and act a lot more spiritual than we really are. I look at the church as a big AA group, we all need help and support and we all need to help and support others in the church.

Q: What do your kids teach you about God?

A: Simple love. Love for no reason, just because. They also teach me “awe”; they will stop at the smallest things and want to explore them. I tend to hurry past anything smaller than the Grand Canyon while they stop and enjoy every little thing in their path. They also teach me to have fun.
